Second Half
In the second half both offenses struggled to get much going. Both teams punted and turned the ball over on downs. Gold intercepted David May twice, the first by Freishtat, and then second near the goal line on a deflected pass and diving catch by Ben Hamburger.
Zimmerman then threw his second interception deep in his own territory to Josh Schooler. David May threw a 10 yard touchdown to Ben Charlton who made a great catch and got his feet in bounds, however the extra point pass was incomplete, and Blue still trailed 20-18.
On their ensuing drive, Gold went to their “Jumbo” line, moving Zimmerman to play guard. Jon Leener and Yossi May ran the ball behind great blocking and through huge holes, and Blue had no answer. Finally Leener, from his quarterback position, faked the handoff to Yossi May and hit Freishtat with a 30 yard touchdown pass, just missing the throw being intercepted by Ben Charlton. Leener’s 4th extra point conversion gave Gold a 27-18 lead with 3 minutes left in the game.
Blue drove to the10 yard line, converting on a 4th and 1, when the Gold defensive line jumped the rush count, and amid the confusion, David May ran 10 yards. On 3rd and goal May was sacked by Dan Fulop for a 10 yard loss. Gold celebrated too early because on the next play, 4th and goal with less than a minute in the game, David May threw a pass to the right corner of the end zone. Gold defender Liav Dahan tipped the ball up in the air instead of batting it down, and Ben Charlton cradled the pass and got both feet in bounds. Charlton’s second touchdown, and Blue’s 4th missed extra point, left them trailing by 3 points, 27-24.
Blue miraculously recovered the onside kick, which was fumbled by Gold player Zach Rosenberg. However 3 incompletions setup 4th down with only 15 seconds left to play. May’s Hail Mary was tipped in the air by Gold defender Liav Dahan, who almost become the goat of the game after several Blue receivers almost came up with the catch in the end zone. Gold knelt down on the final play to secure their thrilling 27-24 victory.
